Fried Oyster Sandwich - An Alternative History in the Medium of Fiction

It has been 21 years since Louisiana abolished slavery, one of the last four states to do so. There was very little conflict about it, and very little disruption. Employment replaced slavery. The law of supply and demand generally determined wages. Confederate money, based on a bi-metallic standard governed by a national bank, is fairly solid. Public morale is very high.

Meet the Kaufmann family. George, the patriarch, was an immigrant from Germany, first to the U.S.A, then to the C.S.A. Eric is his son, now 20 years old. Eric’s mother died in the yellow fever epidemic of 1901. He is George’s only child. He is a student at Tulane University. He has become involve with Stephanie Weaver, a student at Sophie Newcombe College, whose home is in Tulka Oklahoma. Their story is told in Part I. the later parts deal with later generation of Kaufmanns.
